Complete internal redecoration and repairs

We’ve completed a series of vital refurbishments to a historic church in High Wycombe, including a complete internal redecoration and repairs to the building’s masonry and lime elevations.

St. Francis of Assisi Church, which was initially designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who was responsible for the design of Battersea Power Station and the famous red telephone booth has been refurbished by Novus. The team took great care during the six-month project to meet the strict requirements set out by English Heritage to preserve the church, which is classed as a Grade II* listed building.

Updates to the church, which were overseen by GMTW Architects, include re-rendering of all internal elevations, replacement of lighting throughout the building and refurbishment of the windows and vestry rooms.

One of the biggest challenges faced was the damp conditions and the state of the lime in the church. This issue was remedied with the removal of the poor-quality lime, which was replaced and painted over with special lime paint.

The team also showed their problem-solving skills when it came to accessing all areas of the church’s interior. The use of a birdcage scaffold and a complex tube and board system enabled the works to be completed safely and efficiently.

Both ourselves and GMTW Architects were impressed by the professionalism and helpfulness of the Novus staff at all levels and by their commitment to the project. It’s great to see the church being restored and renewed, in order to serve local communities to the fullest potential.
