Large single-storey extension at a retirement village

We completed a large single-story extension at a retirement village in South Cheshire, delivering the complex project on time to create more space for residents and staff alike.

The award-winning retirement scheme in Nantwich, was the first of seven luxury Richmond Village schemes to be opened by BUPA 20 years ago. The thriving community boasts two restaurants, a hair salon and even its own pristine bowling green. It offers three distinct levels of care for residents, with independent living flats alongside a fully registered care home, which has been enhanced following the recent project undertaken by staff from our Build office in Stoke-on-Trent and designed by DWA architects.

Extension Project Details

Taking just over twenty-five weeks to complete, the project involved extending the care home’s existing dining room as well as some of the bedrooms and creating additional office space for staff. The project completed on schedule, despite a number of challenges encountered underground including running sand, which had to be swiftly dealt with by our team.

The exterior of the care home, like the rest of the buildings within the purpose-built complex, was designed in keeping with the traditional black and white style cottages found in the nearby Elizabethan market town of Nantwich. All the materials used on the new extension were carefully chosen to ensure the new extension toned in with the rest of the retirement village scheme.

As part of the project, 15 bedrooms on the ground floor were extended by 4.5 sq. m. We also created individual patio seating areas complete with new external lighting for each bedroom and installed patio doors to each bedroom. The roof area of the new ground floor bedroom extension was utilised to create an attractive first floor balcony with glass balustrading. The team also installed new patio doors for each of the 15 first floor bedrooms to enable residents to sit outside on their new balconies and enjoy the views overlooking the scheme’s award-winning landscaped gardens.

The dining room serves home-cooked three course meals seven days a week and is a central hub for residents to get together and socialise with each other as well as family and friends who are also invited to use the restaurant. The extension increased the size of the dining room area by an additional 90 sq. m, more than doubling the size so that it can accommodate even more residents comfortably.

Our operatives also completed the conversion of an existing staffroom into a new fully-equipped laundry room. The former, slightly smaller laundry room was then converted into a new larger office area, creating an extra 40 sq. m office space.

Awards Won

The village won Best Retirement Village 2017 in the Caring UK awards in the December following the works being complete.

This project involved a number of different elements, from the ground floor extensions and redecoration (Internal link https://www.novussolutions.co.uk/services/painting-and-decorating) to the attractive new balconies and glass balustrading, to undertake in a short time frame. Encountering running sand can set a project back but the team were able to overcome the issues without delaying things and made sure we delivered the project right on time. “The fact that the care home remained in use and fully operational throughout meant that the team had to work sensitively around residents, visitors and staff and be mindful to keep any disruption to a minimum – something which we take very seriously.
