Two-part refurbishment programme

We have created three additional resource areas for The Percy Hedley Foundation in Newcastle following a two-part refurbishment programme.

Percy Hedley’s College in Forest Hall offers specialist individual study programmes for students aged between 16 and 25, supported by an interdisciplinary team of tutors, therapists and support staff. The college aims to empower students with skills and confidence in their personal goals and aspirations to achieve, believe and succeed during their transition into adulthood.

College Refurbishment Project

A team of 15 operatives from our Gateshead office completed the £100,000 project designed to improve the facilities at the school by reconfiguring two underused areas of the building. The complex project had to be carried out over the summer break to ensure the work was completed in time for the start new school term.

The first phase of the project was to open up a previously unused, empty space within the campus to create accessible classrooms with welfare facilities for students and staff.

Our operatives remodelled the layout, opening up what was originally two individual classrooms in to three multi-function teaching areas. A five metre steel lintel was installed in the ceiling to create a new open plan central room which, due to its sheer size and weight, required a significant amount of planning and preparation by the team to ensure a smooth installation.

In addition, our operatives also refurbished four toilet areas to ensure they all met accessibility standards and provided accessible welfare facilities for all the students.

The second phase of the project involved refurbishing and remodelling an existing classroom to create an independent learning space for college students. The team also refurbished the washroom facilities as part of this phase.

The newly reconfigured rooms were both finished with a colourful colour scheme, designed to encourage concentration and learning among the students. We also installed new windows and doors to complete both new areas at the college.

Novus’ Commitment to Make a Difference

On completion of the refurbishment, Novus donated some paint and brushes to the college to use for any future arts and crafts events or skills-based activities as part of the contractor’s commitment to make a difference to the communities in which it operates.

The deadline from starting the project to the college re-opening to students in September was very tight and left very little room for delay. “The fact that the project was handed over on time is thanks to the hard work and dedication of the whole 15-stong team who worked tirelessly at the college all summer. We also held weekly progress meetings and kept in constant communication with college staff throughout which meant decisions could be made quickly when necessary to avoid any hold-ups to the planned schedule.
