Internal redecoration

The internal decoration of The Manchester Grammar School’s ornate Memorial Hall was completed by the Novus team, ahead of the school’s 500th anniversary in 2015.

We worked in partnership with the school and other trades over an eight week period to carefully refresh the stunning hall, which will host celebrations to mark the milestone birthday next year.

With the use of scaffolding, extensive preparations were carried out by the team ahead of the decoration work, including the washing and light abrasion of timber panelling, which was later treated with specialist wood oil in order to maintain the life cycle of the new coating.

We delicately completed intricate work in the room, honouring a tradition adopted by the school of leaving one decorative leaf on the 12-metre high ceiling unfinished, while painting the rest.

A classic colour scheme was chosen for the hall by Crown Paints, with the team carrying out the work sensitively, around distinguished features such as striking stained glass windows.

The Memorial Hall is the primary location for prize-giving assemblies at the school and sits inside the main building of the school, which was founded in 1515. The school building itself was finished in 1931 and the Memorial Hall commemorates the First and Second World Wars.

The High Master of The Manchester Grammar School, Dr Martin Boulton, said: “I am delighted with the redecoration of the Memorial Hall, which has been carried out in time for the school’s 500th anniversary.”

Our work was recognised as highly commended in the highly decorative category by the Painting and Decorating Association.

Working at extreme height, these works needed extensive repairs to the ceiling and preparation to the wood panelling, before redecorating commenced. The works have been extremely well carried out decoratively; the finishes are very good indeed. The company should be proud of their workforce and the craftsmanship demonstrated.
