NOVUS DONATES £5000 TO ARMED FORCES MONUMENT
As part of our roofing scheme with Wrexham County Borough Council, Novus has donated £5,000 for the creation of an Armed Forces Monument, which will allow the local community to remember soldiers who lost their lives at war and those that wore the regiment’s uniform with pride.
Our Operations Manager Steve Stockford and our Quantity Surveyor Paul Shaw attended the unveiling of the statue at a public ceremony in Hightown Barracks on Saturday the 18th of March, alongside Llandudno based sculptor Nick Elphick, the Royal Welch Regimental Goat Shenkin of the 3rd Battalion, the Goat Major, members of The Royal Welsh, The Corps of Drums marching band, and hundreds of local residents.
The sculpture is situated at the entrance of Hightown Barracks and is surrounded by a memorial garden with seven arches incorporating slate plaques engraved with the Regimental Crest and Company Badges of the Regiment. The memorial will be lit up each night to allow people to pay their respects.
The unveiling also saw music and song from the Froncysytlle Male Voice Choir, who ended their session with the Men of Harlech alongside Ysgol Bodhyfryd Pupils. The Chair of Offa Community Council and Cllr Linda Subacchi also recited Hedd Wynn, the war poet who joined the 15th Battalion of the Royal Welsh in World War I.
Our Operations Manager Steve Stockford commented:
“The statue is a fitting tribute to the Barracks, the soldiers who wore the regiments uniform with distinction, their families, and to the memory of many that were lost during the conflicts the Royal Welch were involved with. It also marks the British Army’s 150-year bond with Wales’s newest city.
“It’s been a huge privilege to have donated to this incredible statue, which is a wonderful landmark on one of the main routes into the city – particularly at night when it is floodlit.“ | “Nick Elphick has done an incredible job to make sure all the tiny details of statue are correct, and it was truly shown at the unveiling..
“We’re very proud of our heritage and are thankful to have been part of this project from the initial turf cutting ceremony, the progress of works and finally being invited to attend the unveiling ceremony.” |
