Update on Novus' commitment to BITC's Business Class Programme
The Chairman of Novus, Stuart Seddon when speaking about why he felt it is important Novus are involved in the Business Class Programme commented: our work in the community is important to me personally - and to Novus as a whole - so we’re involved with numerous corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Last year we formed a partnership with Thistley Hough Academy as part of Business in the Community’s (BITC) flagship education programme, Business Class. BITC works with businesses to help bring about change and the Business Class scheme we’re involved with aims to support a cluster of eight schools in disadvantaged communities by creating long-term sustainable partnerships. I’m a member of BITC’s Regional Leadership Board, and chair my local Business Class Cluster, so am heavily involved in the initiative and with BITC as a whole.

In terms of Working together, using an action plan built with the help of BITC, we are helping Thistley Hough in a range of priority areas, including leadership and governance, the curriculum, enterprise and employability. In partnership, we look at how industry and the education sector can work alongside each other to better prepare youngsters for their future working lives. We have established skills development opportunities for pupils at the school, including skills taster days, training, work experience, interview sessions and mentoring. We are also supporting the development of a school farm and allotment, which you will read more about below.

We were delighted when Novus won the Responsible Small Business award at BITC’s Responsible Business Awards earlier this year, as our commitment to Thistley Hough, and to CSR in general, was recognised and rewarded. It is important that lessons in the classroom are not only relevant to life in the world of work but also to the young people themselves. We are confident that we can - and are making a great contribution to staff and pupils at Thistley Hough and we look forward to continuing our partnership to bring positive results and opportunities for all involved with the academy. With the new academic year just starting, we have some exciting plan's in place, so watch this space.
