Description: Specialised Glazing Works

A team from our Glasgow Office recently completed specialised glazing works at St Mary’s Church Haddington. The church was built over 700 years ago, and has had numerous restorations and changes over the years to ensure it remains a safe and welcoming sanctuary for the residents of Haddington.

The principal task at St Mary’s Church was to form a full height glazed screen, erected on the original sandstone slabbed floor of the church located at the north door. The church requested a draught screen to help contain heat and reduce heat loss in the main body of the church, whilst maintaining an uninterrupted view of the organs.
The screen was completed below the soffit of the organ, and when you see these elements together it has a striking appearance.
Novus oversaw the management of the project. The works included lifting the original sandstone slabs, adding support for the service duct below to take the weight of the new screen and installed a bespoke screen around the organ. In addition, we carried out painting and decorating works, electrical installations, builder work and joinery tasks. We had 2- 3 operatives on site each day ensuring that minimal disruption took place at the church.
We worked closely with the church to only carry out work on selected dates, so we did not interrupt any of the Christmas services being undertaken at the time. We also had to readjust some dates due to short notice services in January. Despite some alterations to the time scale, we were able to complete the works on time and to the specification.

Alex McKendry, the architect from JMA Architects who oversaw the project commented “on behalf of the Kirk Session of St Mary’s Church thank you and all involved for the magnificent job delivered. All greatly appreciated.  Well done to you and your team for the hard work and being so flexible and accommodating the church’s circumstances. You were highly praised by the minister on Sunday morning in both services.”
