Six Town Housing
We were enlisted to carry out external painting and repairs to 1500 of Six Town Housing’s properties in Bury and as part of the contract we recruited and trained four ex-offenders from the local area, who performed some of the external decorative work.
The four new recruits were put forward to Novus by Greater Manchester Probation Service
and after background checks, we trained them up in areas including manual handling, fire
awareness and ladder and tower safety, which gained them a CSCS qualification.
We gave them basic painting and decorating training and they then helped to expertly carry
out work to window sills, fascias, porches and doors. The 42-week contract ran smoothly, to
schedule and with time to spare.
We ensured works to the housing association’s properties were completed to our usual high standards, while offering the placements provided opportunities and training to people from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them a boost and a new chance in life.
Because of our training, our recruits were able to:
·         Learn new skills
·         Gain experience
·         Build confidence
Earn a living Gary Leach, site supervisor, said: “As part of the contract we took on some ex-offenders from the area who have had difficult times during their lives. This gives them a clean break- they’ve got a job and they have been given a second chance which luckily they’re taking with both hands. It builds confidence, they’re earning a wage and after being given a chance they’re proving themselves.”
Jason Neald, one of our recruits, said: “It’s the biggest opportunity I have had. I have grabbed it with two hands and I have given it 110%.”
