Value: £30,000
Location: Edinburgh
Duration: 4 weeks
Project Description: Classroom Refurbishment

For 350 years George Heriot’s School has served as one of Scotland’s most distinguished schools. Today, it flourishes as an independent coeducational day school.

Children between 3 and 18, from in and around the city of Edinburgh, form a vibrant school community. Together with staff, parents, governors, alumni, and friends, Heriot’s pupils hold true to the vision of Founder George Heriot.

In light of the strong relationship, Novus have built with other independent schools in Edinburgh the Novus Business Development Manager for Scotland undertook a campaign to introduce Novus services to other schools of a similar nature in the city. Further to this Novus were contacted by Estates Manager Andrew MacLachlan to survey and price the refurbishment of 2 classrooms.

Due to the historic nature of the school building, there were particular logistical challenges which had to be considered. The entrance to the School is an archway not suitable for many construction vehicles to access, furthermore the classrooms were housed within a turret with a winding staircase to gain access and so site H & S plans had to be looked at carefully when surveying and pricing the project.

Works included; Strip out of all old fixtures, fittings, flooring and mechanical & electrical. Installation of
new storage units, bespoke joinery to create shelving and hockey stick holders, install of new mechanical &
electrical fixtures, new flooring, and redecoration.

The main challenge Novus faced was to ensure the tight programme of works was adhered to, in readiness
for pupils returning from the summer break. This proved to be particularly testing due to the fact that a
number of the specified products were on long lead times, therefore it was imperative that procurement
was completed at the earliest possible stage.
