Project description: Refurbishment to the fertility unit and transformation of staff working areas.

The full refurbishment of 14 rooms and the reception area within the fertility unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital took place over a demanding four-week period.

The unit, which has been providing care to couples and individuals experiencing fertility problems for over 30
years, needed to be brought back into use swiftly so that it could resume providing care for those needing fertility treatment as soon as possible.

During the project, the team from our Birmingham office installed new air conditioning units, a suspended ceiling, new lighting, as well as general electric and data cabling. The team also plastered the walls, created new wall partitioning, laid flooring and fitted new doors, before redecorating and completing the project with soft furniture.

The new waiting area in reception, which was a key part of the project, now provides a quiet place in which patients can sit comfortably and wait during what can be an incredibly difficult and emotional time.

It wasn’t just the patients who benefitted from the refurbishment, we also created new workstations to cater for the sheer volume of midwives, doctors, nurses and surgeons working at the busy hospital. We transformed three staff areas – an internet café, conservatory and dining area - to house three brand new workstations.

As with any project involving work in a sensitive live environment, efficient project planning was essential to ensure disruption for both patients and staff alike was kept to a minimum. For this particular project, we worked on site on a bi-weekly basis to give the nursing staff, who are under intense pressure day-to-day at the hospital, some welcome breathing space during the works.

The whole operation was very demanding for our workforce but the team worked hard to ensure every task was completed on time with the correct people deployed at the right time throughout.
