NOVUS ATTENDS GRAND OPENING OF CANAL COURT

Novus colleagues were delighted to attend the grand opening of Canal Court, where we have carried out a number of internal and external works.

Canal Court, located in the heart of Manchester City Centre, is a six storey, self-contained block of flats owned by Your Housing Limited. Built in 1996, this retirement housing complex houses elderly Chinese and Cantonese residents and was in desperate need of internal and external works.

What works did we carry out?

Whilst working on site at Canal Court our dedicated operatives carried out a number of internal works including the installation of full electrical lighting and heating along with the removal and renewal of the old grid and tile ceilings to all floors and stairs, plus the refurbishment of communal areas of the property involving painting and carpet replacement. We also carried out directional signage and compliance works which included the installation of 49 communal fire doors and frames. Our expert operatives also gave the building some extra attention, by painting the external frontage, which made the property stand out in the street.

Were there any challenges?

Language differences were a problem when working on this project due to the flats being occupied by Chinese and Cantonese residents. Our team quickly resolved this issue by creating signage in both English and Cantonese which was clearly displayed on site. This ensured the residents were aware of our presence while the works we were being carried out. In addition to this, the manager was always present for any language barriers we encountered. We were also mindful of the cultural differences and worked around any holidays and planned events.

Canal Court Grand Opening

Once the works were completed, Your Housing Limited couldn’t wait to highlight our efforts and organised a grand opening of the building on Monday 11th April, where a large number of residents, clients and contractors attended. Our team came bearing gifts to celebrate the completion of the works – plants and plant pots which will be used to add some colour to the entrance of the flats. A Chinese banquet was also served at a sheltered scheme five minutes from Canal Court, where everyone tucked into lots of tasty food whilst celebrating!

Our Contract Manager, Paul Moss commented:

“We have successfully undertaken numerous works of this type for Your Housing Limited. The works at Canal Court saw another successful undertaking and we have more similar works in the pipeline with them. The works were a complete success, and the client and customer were extremely happy with the result.”

Our Site Manager, Alan Tierney also received a special mention by our client for his commitment in organising the scheme and his interaction with the both the residents and client.

Well done to the team for another successfully delivered project where we went above and beyond and showcased our special ‘Novus Way’ to everyone involved.

We asked Lily to tell us about her journey so far, and her aspirations for the future – and what she would tell people considering beginning their own apprenticeship journey in our sector.
